“My voice doesn’t need to be the loudest to be the most influential; it just needs to be the most grounded in purpose.”
This is Tabitha’s mantra. As the Digital Transformation Lead for Google for Education in Sub-Saharan Africa, she operates at the intersection of technology, policy, and people, guiding large-scale change across one of the most diverse education landscapes in the world. But beneath the strategy and scale lies a deeply personal anchor: a commitment to purpose-driven leadership.
Grounded in Purpose: A Leadership Journey Shaped by People
Tabitha's path into leadership doesn't follow the arc we're taught to admire — the clean ascent, the perfectly timed pivot. It has been shaped, rerouted, and deepened by the very people she serves: educators navigating impossible complexity, communities straining toward equity in a world moving faster than its infrastructure.
“My journey has been defined by a deep-seated commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that technology serves as a catalyst for educational equity.”
Leading across Sub-Saharan Africa is not a desk job. It is an education in itself. It requires empathy as much as expertise, the ability to hold a continental vision while honoring the texture of individual communities. "My leadership journey hasn't been a straight line," she adds. "It has been shaped by the resilience of the educators I serve and the rapidly evolving landscape of education."
From Expert to Student: The Habit That Changed Everything
In a world that often rewards immediacy and certainty, Tabitha has built her influence on something quieter: listening.
At a time when leadership is frequently equated with having the answers, she made a conscious shift—to step back, and tune in.
“I made a disciplined shift to spend the first 20% of every engagement, simply listening without formulating a rebuttal or a pitch.”
What emerged from that discipline was insight no dataset could offer, transforming not just outcomes, but relationships.
“This habit transformed my impact because it allowed me to spot the ‘invisible’ barriers to technology adoption. This moves our strategy from ‘deploying tools’ to ‘solving human problems.’”
Navigating the Authority Gap with Authenticity
Like many women in leadership, Tabitha has had to confront the subtle but persistent challenge of the authority gap, where expertise is questioned or overlooked. Her response is not to conform, but to root herself more deeply in who she is.
“I stopped trying to fit the traditional ‘executive mold’ and leaned into my unique perspective as a woman leading in tech.”
And in doing so, she redefined what influence looks like. “My voice didn't need to be the loudest to be the most influential; it just needed to be the most grounded in purpose.”
Lessons in Growth: Advice to Her Younger Self
Looking back, Tabitha sees growth not as a straight ascent, but as a process that requires endurance, clarity, and care. “Resilience is a muscle, not a personality trait.”
She would remind her younger self to embrace uncertainty and resist the pressure to have it all figured out. And perhaps most importantly, to redefine rest.
“Rest is not a reward for hard work; it is a prerequisite for sustained leadership,” She noted.
Give to Gain: The Power of Open-Source Leadership
For Tabitha, Give to Gain is not just a concept,it is a practice she embodies daily.
She describes her approach as Open-Source Leadership: a willingness to share knowledge freely, without guarding it as a source of power.
“I don't hoard information to maintain authority; I share it to accelerate our collective progress.”
