“I had a leadership shift from reacting to problems to building informed, sustainable solutions.”
It’s a powerful realization and one that defines how Apiyo Anyango leads today.
As the Founder and Director of Youth Alliance 4 Change (YA4C), Apiyo leads a feminist, youth-driven organization at the frontlines of preventing and responding to violence against women and girls. Her work moves across multiple registers at once; strengthening legislative awareness, mobilizing communities for gender justice, supporting survivors, and producing the kind of research that doesn't just sit in reports — it walks into policy rooms and demands to be heard.
She is 26 - and she has been doing this for years, setting her leadership apart not just by what she does, but how closely she does it.
“My leadership journey has been shaped by working closely with communities where gender inequality and violence remain everyday realities,” She noted.
These lived experiences have anchored her belief that leadership must center community voices and go further to translate those voices into advocacy and systemic change.
The Shift That Changed Everything
At the core of Apiyo’s leadership is a defining habit: grounding advocacy in community evidence and lived experiences.
“We document their experiences and use that knowledge to inform campaigns, policy conversations and improve programming.”
Working closely with survivors of violence and girls and women facing barriers to accessing SRHR services, her team ensures that real stories directly shape the solutions being designed.
Leading Through Resistance
Gender justice work is not polite work. It asks people to sit with truths they would often rather avoid about violence, about power, about the systems that protect perpetrators and silence survivors. Resistance, in Apiyo's field, is not the exception. It is the weather.
Her response has never been to soften the conversation. It has been to widen it.
“Addressing this requires persistence, community dialogue, and engaging diverse stakeholders including men and community leaders,” She added.
Through initiatives like the Cheki-Dem Initiative and the Responsible Masculinity Forum, she is helping create spaces where conversations about positive masculinities and accountability can happen more constructively.
Lessons in Patience and Purpose
Apiyo’s leadership reflections are striking in their honesty especially given how recent her early career years still feel.
“I was 25 like a year and a half ago and it still feels the same.”
Yet even within that short time, one lesson stands out clearly: “Meaningful change requires patience and collective action.”
For her, addressing complex issues like violence against women and girls is not about quick wins. It requires long-term commitment, partnerships, and continuous learning.
Giving to Gain
This philosophy extends into how she interprets this year’s International Women’s Day theme: . “Give to Gain reflects the power of investing in communities and movements.”
Through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and advocacy platforms, Apiyo actively works to amplify the voices of women and girls.
Apiyo Anyango is not reacting anymore. She is building. And the architecture she is laying down, piece by patient piece, is designed to hold long after the crisis has passed.
That's what sustainable looks like. That's what it looks like when someone leads not from the top, but from the truth.
