The hidden lessons that Lorna Juma has learned through motherhood has been patience, resilience and prioritizing what truly matters.

A leadership journey shaped by exposure and purpose

Lorna Juma works at the intersection of education and technology, where her focus is clear: expanding access to digital skills for both students and educators. Through her work with Oracle Academy, she partners with schools and teachers to equip learners with skills in programming, databases, AI, and cloud computing.

But beyond the programs and partnerships, her leadership journey is anchored in a deeper belief: “Exposure creates opportunity.”

For Lorna, this belief is not abstract. It is a guiding principle. When young people, especially girls, are exposed to what is possible in technology and innovation, it reshapes how they imagine their futures. It opens doors that many didn’t even know existed.

Motherhood has further deepened this perspective. Being a mother of two has influenced how she leads, reminding her that leadership is not about perfection, but presence. As she reflects, “Leadership isn’t just about doing everything perfectly, it’s also about showing up with purpose and helping others grow along the way.”

The power of listening

One of the most transformative shifts in Lorna’s leadership came from a simple but powerful habit: listening.

Early in her career, like many leaders, she felt the pressure to always have the answers. But over time, she discovered that leadership is less about speaking and more about creating space.

“When you truly listen, people feel valued, and better solutions often emerge,” She noted.

This shift didn’t just improve her effectiveness, it reshaped how she collaborates, mentors, and leads. By choosing to listen deeply and actively, she has built environments where ideas can thrive and people feel seen.

Navigating self-doubt and finding community

Like many women in leadership, Lorna has had to confront moments of self-doubt especially when stepping into unfamiliar spaces.

There were times she questioned her readiness, moments of hesitation that many high-achieving women quietly experience. But through those moments, she came to a powerful realization: “Growth often happens before you feel fully ready.”

This mindset shift became a turning point.

Equally important was the role of community. Surrounding herself with people who encouraged, challenged, and reminded her of her capabilities became essential.

“I have also learned the importance of community - surrounding yourself with people who encourage you, challenge you, and remind you of your capabilities when you forget.”

Lessons she would tell her younger self

Looking back, Lorna’s advice to her 25-year-old self is rooted in grace and perspective.

“Careers are rarely linear.”

In a world that often pressures young professionals to have everything figured out, she would encourage her younger self to stay curious, to embrace discomfort, and to trust that every experience is building toward something meaningful.

And perhaps most importantly, she would offer a reminder shaped by both leadership and motherhood: “Life has seasons, and it’s okay if everything doesn’t move at the same pace.”

Giving as a pathway to growth

For Lorna, “Give to Gain,” is deeply personal. It reflects how she approaches leadership every day.

“Leadership is about creating opportunities for others while growing yourself.”

She gives through mentorship, through programs that expose students to technology, and through intentionally opening doors for girls who may not yet see themselves in these spaces.

“If we want more women in technology tomorrow, we must inspire girls today.”
